Graduate Program Requirements

Graduate students in the Department of Natural Resources Science are enrolled in one of three programs:

Master of Environmental Science and Management
(See www.uri.edu/cels/acadprograms/mesmextra.html)
   At least 33 credits of graduate coursework, including 21-25 credits of core courses and 6-10 credits of elective courses specified by the student’s specialization and at least 2 credits of graduate seminar, including a terminal oral presentation.
   3 credits in EVS 598 (Professional Master’s Research).
   At least one-half of the total program course credits shall be at the 500-level or above.
   Written Master’s (comprehensive) examination.

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences

   At least 24 credits of graduate coursework, including at least 2 credits in NRS 600 (Graduate Seminar in Natural Resources). 
   At least 6 credits in EVS 599 (Master’s Thesis Research).
   At least one-half of the total program course credits shall be at the 500-level or above.
   Approval of thesis, in final form, by Thesis Committee and Graduate School.

Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences

   Advanced courses determined in consultation with the candidate’s Doctoral Committee.  Courses shall be at the 500-level or higher, unless the student has no Master’s degree; in that case, up to 14 credits may be at the 400-level.  A doctoral program must include at least 72 credits beyond the baccalaureate degree, and at least 42 of these must have been taken at URI.  Coursework shall also include at least 2 credits in NRS 600.
   18-24 credits in EVS 699 (Doctoral Dissertation Research) and 18-24 credits in courses at the 500-level or higher, for a total of at least 42 credits beyond the 30 credits required for the Master’s degree.
   Qualifying examination, if the candidate does not hold a Master's degree.
   Written and oral comprehensive examinations.
   Oral defense of dissertation, preceded by departmental seminar.
   Approval of dissertation, in final form, by Doctoral Committee and Graduate School.
