NRS Research
 The NRS research mission is to use hypothesis-based methods of scientific inquiry to develop practical solutions to environmental problems. We address research problems in natural and disturbed ecosystems, and the results of our studies are applicable to regional, national, and global scales. The Department of Natural Resources Science has the unique ability to conduct comprehensive, multidisciplinary, multi-scale research within a single academic department and as such, provides a research home for a wide variety of environmental scientists who share a commitment to collaborative research.
 The research program of the NRS Department addresses research areas in: Aquatic Ecology, Avian Ecology, Biodegradation and Bioremediation, Forest Ecosystem Ecology, Landscape Ecology, Spatial Data Analysis, Pedology, Soil Ecology, Terrestrial Remote Sensing, Watershed Science, Wetland Science and Management, and Wildlife and Conservation Biology.
In addition to the core research support provided by the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station, the Department also enjoys excellent research relationships with many Federal and State agencies, including the U.S. Natural Resource Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Rhode Island Sea Grant, and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
 The National Park Service's Coastal Field Station and Inventory and Monitoring Program, both located at the University of Rhode Island, afford research opportunities for faculty and students in this department. The National Park Service also maintains a Field Technical Support Center for Geographic Information System (GIS) activities in the Department, and this provides an excellent opportunity for research using GIS technology. The Department also hosts the Rhode Island Natural History Survey.
Although Rhode Island is the principal experimental arena for NRS scientists, faculty conduct research projects throughout the United States and in Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia.
